So, you all know I'm an engineer, right? And engineers get caught up in details? And facts? And logic? And that there are processes and rules in order to do just about anything? That this is all hard wired in me - part of who I am? Yeah, being a parent is contrary to everything I just said. Don't misunderstand me. I think I'm a good parent. I think I'm the best parent for Annika (well, besides Kris. I think he's pretty excellent too.) However, I read all these books that say do this and don't do that. Eat this food at this age. Your child should crawl, walk, talk, etc. at this age or that age. What I have to remember - and what I found this morning at Tertia's blog (link here) - is that none of that matters. I need to trust my instincts. And to trust Kris's instincts too. And I need to cherish these times with Annika because they are all too fleeting. She is already on the verge of crawling. She can sit by herself unsupported for longer and longer periods. She has teeth! And I need to stop listening to what every other parent or book says and do what is right for my family. See GetupGrrl's entry on Mothering Drive-By's to know where all this is coming from. (link here) . Be sure to also read at least some of the comments. Co-sleeping? Yes - until one of us (Annika, Kris or myself) decides it's not right for us anymore. Breastfeeding? Yes - until Annika or I say enough and that may mean extended breastfeeding (when the child is over 1 year of age). Disposable diapering - it works for us. Pacifiers - if Annika wants one, Annika can have one. There are more parenting choices that Kris and I will make in the coming years(to spank or not - ear-piercing - first sleepover - dating, etc.). We will always make the choices that are right for our family. For our child. Our individual. OK, Kris is calling me so I have to go. I don't know where this post came from. I guess reading Tertia's and GetUpGrrl's recent entries have touched a nerve.
