So, you all know I'm an engineer, right? And engineers get caught up in details? And facts? And logic? And that there are processes and rules in order to do just about anything? That this is all hard wired in me - part of who I am? Yeah, being a parent is contrary to everything I just said. Don't misunderstand me. I think I'm a good parent. I think I'm the best parent for Annika (well, besides Kris. I think he's pretty excellent too.) However, I read all these books that say do this and don't do that. Eat this food at this age. Your child should crawl, walk, talk, etc. at this age or that age. What I have to remember - and what I found this morning at Tertia's blog (link here) - is that none of that matters. I need to trust my instincts. And to trust Kris's instincts too. And I need to cherish these times with Annika because they are all too fleeting. She is already on the verge of crawling. She can sit by herself unsupported for longer and longer periods. She has teeth! And I need to stop listening to what every other parent or book says and do what is right for my family. See GetupGrrl's entry on Mothering Drive-By's to know where all this is coming from. (link here) . Be sure to also read at least some of the comments. Co-sleeping? Yes - until one of us (Annika, Kris or myself) decides it's not right for us anymore. Breastfeeding? Yes - until Annika or I say enough and that may mean extended breastfeeding (when the child is over 1 year of age). Disposable diapering - it works for us. Pacifiers - if Annika wants one, Annika can have one. There are more parenting choices that Kris and I will make in the coming years(to spank or not - ear-piercing - first sleepover - dating, etc.). We will always make the choices that are right for our family. For our child. Our individual. OK, Kris is calling me so I have to go. I don't know where this post came from. I guess reading Tertia's and GetUpGrrl's recent entries have touched a nerve.

More news - Annika is actually cutting 2 teeth right now! Both of her bottom middle teeth are coming in. Other than not pooping, they don't seem to be bothering her. (She hasn't gone since Monday). Not much else new to report.

Breaking News! Breaking News! Annika cut her first tooth yesterday!!! It's on the bottom center of her mouth. There's just a couple little pokes through her gums. If you run your finger along her gums, you can feel them. This came as a complete surprise yesterday. She hasn't been fussy or crabby. Her sleep patterns haven't been out of the ordinary. She hasn't had a temperature. She's been drooling since she was two months old and she's been chewing on anything that gets near her mouth for months as well. My baby is growing up! Waaaaaa! No more toothless grin! Can I freeze time please? PLEASE?

More milestones - I went shopping yesterday after work at Old Navy. Annika was with me and I didn't want to have to lug her heavy infant carrier around the store. Instead, I took her out of her car seat, got a shopping cart and set her in the front. She sat in the front like a big girl and rode around the store! Her cute little, itty bitty legs were dangling out the front. I had a blanket wrapped around her for extra support but she really didn't need it. She came home with 5 outfits. New Rule - you cut teeth - you get cute summer clothes! They had these adorable cropped pants for babies and they were on sale. Yeah, I know - cropped pants? For babies? But think about it - this summer she'll be crawling and now she won't scrape up her knees or get them all dirty because they'll be covered by pants! But the pants are shorter and cooler! She'll be so adorable!!

I don't think I mentioned it yesterday but at Robyn's on Saturday night, I weighed Annika. Robyn has an infant scale, digital even! Anyway, I needed to change Annika's diaper so I just stripped her down and weighed her. She was 16 pounds 10 ounces! Since most 3-6 month clothing is 12-18 pounds, she's quickly growing out of those. Some of her 3-6 month clothing is 12-16 pounds though. No wonder those don't fit her anymore!

Annika has been eating cereal for about a month now. Things have been less "regular" in our house since then. The last "event" happened on Thursday. I was starting to get worried. Well, today, we had a "blowout." Kris actually hosed her down in the tub. He said he's "saving" the clothes for me. I said "please don't." I won't be home with her until later tonight, closer to her bed time (which is 7pm) and I don't want to have to deal with it then! Poor girl! I hope she's feeling better!

Annika had a big and exciting weekend! She had her first play date on Saturday! Four of my co-workers all had baby girls last year (June, July and two in November). We decided we should get them together every couple months to play. Saturday was our first playdate. I think Annika had a good time. She kept staring at the other babies. And I think she thought Jessica's crawling was pretty cool. Unfortunately, it seems my daughter is a bully. :) We lined up the babies on a couch to take pictures. Accidentally, we lined them up in age order. Annika is the middle of these five with Abigail and Emma on her right (the November babies) and Brianna and Jessica on her right. Well, Annika kept trying to grab Emma's head! She kept putting her right arm up and grabbing the top of Emma's head. I was kneeling on the floor in front of the couch trying to take pictures so I would pull her arm down back in front of her. She would immediately put it back on Emma's head. I asked someone to hand me a toy to occupy Annika. Someone handed me Annika's triangle rattle. Yeah, Annika just used it as a weapon and hit Emma in the face with it! The triangle rattle is hard plastic! It didn't seem to phase Emma. She didn't cry or anything, but I felt horrible! I apologized right away. I'll have to teach Annika some manners before the next outing (yeah, right!) or at least give her a softer toy! :) Yes, I know she didn't mean to hit Emma, that she's still working on body control, that you can't teach manners at this young an age, etc. etc. We have two more babies that weren't able to make it. A boy, Alex, also born in June and a boy, Alec, born in December. I'm hoping they can both make it to the next one. We also have another baby due this summer. We're having a population explosion here at work!

Yesterday, Annika got lots of love. She got to see Grandma Pat, Auntie Krystle, Grandma and Grandpa F, Uncle Dusty and Aunt Kim. We went down to our new lot and showed everyone the model home. So far, everything is falling into place. We might be moving this year!

Annika Milestone Update:
Annika can now get up on her hands and knees pretty much at will. She rocks back and forth while up there but hasn't learned yet that her hands and knees can move. She could be crawling by next week (!) or it could be months yet. She's growing so fast!

Annika is starting to show affection. She's been smiling for some time now (almost since birth) but now she'll start to reach for people and she gives "kisses." Basically her "kisses" are her sucking on your face. No, literally, she grabs your face. Then she puts her open mouth on your cheek or your chin and sucks or blows raspberries. Then, she'll pop off, screech in happiness, stomp her feet, and grab your face again and plant her open mouth back on you. I happen to love this! :) Kris, Annika and I were out to dinner last night with Grandpa, Auntie Krystle, Pierce and Uncle Mathias and Annika was "kissing" Grandpa. Then, later, she was "kissing" me. Then, while sucking right square on my chin, she started licking it! What a weird little girl! Man, I love her so much!

Fun new things here at our house! First, Annika can now scoot frontwards and backwards. To scoot ahead, she gets on her hands and knees and then pushes with her feet and goes an inch or two forwards. To go backwards, she gets on her hands and knees and pushes with her hands. She doesn't get very far either way but she definitely doesn't end up where she started! She hasn't figured out that her arms and legs move independently yet though. Second, Annika is pretty proficient at rolling over. This is proving difficult now at diaper and clothes changes. Tonight, as I'm trying to get her ready for bed while talking to Kris on the phone, Annika kept rolling onto her tummy. It's a little hard to change a diaper, hold a phone, keep up a conversation, listen to what Kris is saying, hold down the baby, etc. Multi-tasker I am! Third, Kris and I went on a date last night for Valentine's. We had a very nice dinner at Chino Latino. Auntie Krystle and Pierce babysat for us. Basically they came over, put Annika to bed and watched a movie the rest of the time. That's not a bad babysitting gig. Fourth, I got a hair cut on Saturday and had some bangs cut in! I haven't had bangs since oh, like the 8th grade! They're long bangs so I pretty much just sweep them to the side so they're out of my eyes. I'm still adjusting so I don't know if I like them yet. Oh, and Fifth - Kris and I put some money down on a lot in Shakopee. If all goes well, we'll be building a house and moving in around Annika's first birthday! Yep, lots of news over here!

I weighed myself holding Annika three times last night and got three different readings. I then weighed myself three times and got three different readings. As far as I can tell, she's about 16 pounds. That's 9 ounces she's gained since her 4 month appointment. I also called yesterday and made her 6 month well baby appointment. It's going to be March 10th at 3:45pm.

Annika is such a funny little girl. One of her favorite activities is to grab onto my ears (when my hair is back in a ponytail) and pull my head forward to hers. Then she puts her mouth right on mine and expects me to make kissing noises or raspberries in her mouth. She loves that and smiles and laughs each time. Of course, I oblige because it's one of my favorite activities too. :)

Annika's starting to wear some of her 6-9 month clothing. I think she's a long baby because her 3-6 month clothing still fits her midsection but is getting a little on the short side. And her 6-9 month clothing is huge on her midsection but is just the right length.

Happy 5 month birthday Annika! Tonight, before your bath, Mommy will weigh you. I bet you're about 16 pounds 4 ounches or so. Let's see how close I am! I'm also going to stop on my way home from work tonight and get some oatmeal or bran cereal for you. So far, you've only had rice cereal. You're getting pretty good at eating it. You do make quite a mess though. I think it's really funny when I bring the spoon to your mouth, you blow out, and cereal goes flying. Then you giggle because you think you're pretty funny too. This may not be so funny when you get bigger though.
You're not sleeping very well right now though. Last night you woke up at 2:10 AM and thought it was go time. Mommy did not agree. :) I ended up having to rock you until 2:50 AM to get you to fall back asleep. Then, of course, as soon as I stood up, you woke up. It was okay though because as soon as we got back in bed and you were nestled so comfortably in the crook of my arm, you fell asleep again. Daddy wonders why I go to bed so early (9:15pm last night), well, it's because you wake up so often at night! You are waking every 1-3 hours lately. I'm going to keep track of it for a week or two and then refer to the No Cry Sleep Solution book to see how I can help you. Don't worry - Mommy won't make you cry it out. She doesn't believe in that. You're little for such a short amount of time that I can help you learn to sleep better without making us both miserable (Mommy couldn't bare to listen to you cry). I hope you're having a good day with Daddy. I can't wait to see you later! Love, Mommy

We had a great time up in Brainerd! We stayed at Causeway on Gull from Sunday through Wednesday. Those accomodations are just beautiful. We had 2 1/2 stories of windows overlooking the lake, a fireplace, a hot tub, a spiral staircase leading to the enclosed loft bedroom above. We also had a full kitchen, a deck with a gas grill, a heated entryway in which we could leave our smelly snowmobiling clothes. It was so nice! Annika did very well in the strange surroundings. She was her normal happy self. And she definitely found her voice and lungs! She's started squealing. She gears up her whole body and lets out these high pitched screams. She's not unhappy, but just screaming for the sake of screaming, I guess. It is the funniest thing. She had us all laughing out loud when she was doing it. We (Grandpa, Marcia, Daddy and me) went out to dinner on Tuesday night and luckily we were the only people in the restaurant because she squealed throughout dinner. I was laughing so hard, I could barely breathe! She is so funny! I can't believe she'll be 5 months old already on Monday! I'll have to weigh her then.
